Program Supervisor

Salary Range:  $15-18 per hour
Reports to:  Plowshares Manager
Date:  updated May 14, 2018
Hours: 18 hours/week, typically 1:30 - 7:00 pm, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday

JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Objective
The Program Supervisor serves as a member of the Leadership Team and works together with that team to fulfill the mission of Plowshares. The Program Supervisor oversees all aspects of the kitchen and dining hall operations during their shift including cooking, menu planning, supervising staff, community service workers and volunteers. The Program Supervisor ensures that guest and good neighbor policies are enforced, and assists with various administrative duties. The Program Supervisor may fill the role of Plowshares Driver when needed. The Program Supervisor is organized, has excellent communication skills and is available to work some required weekends and holidays. The Program Supervisor is expected to embrace Plowshares’ mission and philosophy.

Essential Functions

  • Present an open, positive, and professional image to all guests, volunteers, co-workers and general public by displaying general warmth and kindness in a friendly, courteous and respectful manner at all times and under all circumstances.
  • Serve as head cook.
  • Assist in menu planning.
  • Serve as Plowshares’ representative and liaison.
  • Drive the Plowshares’ van to pick up and deliver food as needed.
  • Assist in food rotation, ordering and distribution.
  • Assist in the coordination of meal planning and preparation.
  • Supervise volunteers and community service workers in cleaning, meal preparation, maintenance, inventory, and serving.
  • Be available to guests, staff, volunteers, and community service workers for special requests, complaints, and solving issues.
  • Assure that facilities are safe, clean, and in compliance with Health and Safety regulations.
  • Enforce Good Neighbor and Guest Policies.
  • Immediately file written report of all incidents and provide to manager.
  • Assist in the coordinating and staffing of all special events and fundraisers.
  • Work occasional weekends and/or holidays as required.
  • Complete ServSafe Training and comply with HACCP and all food safety laws.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Competencies

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher
  • Ability to effectively work with guests in poverty, crisis, the mentally ill and developmentally disabled
  • Problem solving/conflict resolution
  • Ability to foster a cooperative atmosphere among staff, volunteers, and guests
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality in all matters

Supervisory Responsibility
This position requires supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a commercial kitchen/community dining hall and may involve exposure to unusual elements such high noise levels, extreme temperatures (e.g. heat from hot ovens, grills, ranges and cold from walk-in coolers and freezers), and smoke.

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use of hands and fingers, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

The position requires the ability to lift 25 pounds unassisted, ability to use a dolly and handcarts.

 Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This position requires ability to work flexible hours and occasional Saturdays and Holidays.

Required Education and Experience

  • H.S. Diploma or GED
  • AA in related field or 4 years equivalent work experience
  • Previous work experience in a commercial kitchen.
  • Previous work experience as a supervisor.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Previous work experience in social services environment

Other Requirements

Valid California Driver's License and insurance with clean driving record

Must Pass Drug Test prior to hire and submit to random drug testing upon hire to ensure compliance with Plowshares’ drug-free workplace policy.

The Program Assistant collaboratively works with the Leadership Team and Plowshares’ staff, volunteers, and community service workers to ensure the Plowshares dining hall, grounds, kitchen, personal care center, and community room are clean and well-maintained, and nutritious meals are prepared and served. The Program Assistant may serve as “lead” team member and guide volunteers and community service workers in required tasks. The Program Assistant may serve as Plowshares Driver. The Program Assistant is professional, organized, has good communication skills and is available to work some required weekends and holidays. The Program Assistant is expected to embrace Plowshares’ mission and philosophy.

Plowshares operates a commercial kitchen and dining hall that is open to the public. This position requires routine use of janitorial equipment, commercial kitchen equipment and garden tools.
